What’s New in Windows 10

Windows 10 has a bevy of new features and improvements over previous versions of Windows. Here are some of my favorites:

The new start menu

Microsoft brought back the start menu for Windows 10. Many users of Windows 7 did not like the Windows 8 full screen start menu. The new start menu is a compromise between the old Windows XP/Vista/7 start menu and the Windows 8 full screen start menu.

If you select the start button on the task bar (the Window button at the lower left) you will find your most used apps on the left, the All Apps list, and shortcuts to other programs like File Explorer and Settings.

Download apps, music, and other things from the Store

The Store is similar to the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Many apps are free and the ones that aren’t free are clearly marked with a purchase price.

Cortana is a personal assistant. You canĀ tellĀ her things like “set up a meeting with Jim” or “send an email to John”. You can do this by typing your request into the Cortana box in the lower left hand corner of the screen, or pressing the microphone button in that box and speaking to her. You can even ask her to tell you a joke or to search for something online for you.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is Microsoft’s eventual replacement for Internet Explorer. It is a web browser with some advanced features like the ability for you to take notes, write, doodle, or highlight directly on webpages. Microsoft Edge is optimized for a touch and or pen interface so those of you with touchscreen devices may like Microsoft Edge more than Internet Explorer or other browsers.

The Photos App

The new photos app has brought all of your photos into one interface. No need to search your entire PC for that picture, open Photos and easily search for what you’re looking for. It’s easy to create albums and edit pictures in the new Photos app.
